Amsterdam is the capital of Netherland. it is also the most populous city in Netherland. Amsterdam is colloquially referred to as the “Venice of the North“, attributed by the large number of canals which form a UNESCO World Heritage Site (en. wikipedia.org). This city is also famous for its museum, flower market, city for bicycle drivers, and football club Ajax Amsterdam.
On this occasion, I will share tips on a day trip in Amsterdam based on my travel experience to the city. Perhaps these tips are needed for those of you who will travel to Amsterdam in one day or maybe just transit at the train station, but still can optimally explore the dam city. Here are some tips I can share for you to enjoy Amsterdam;
- Stay at hotel near train station or store your luggages in Luggage Storage if you just transit.
Why do you must stay at hotel near train station? Because it will save your time, therefore you still have enough time to explore the city. You can search for the hotel using google maps that will show information about the location of the hotel around the station and the availability of rooms and also the price at that time. For certainty room, I suggest booking the hotel before you leave for Amsterdam.
There are several hotel near to the station such as Double Tree by Hilton, Ibis Styles Amsterdam Central Station, Art’otel Amsterdam, Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam, A-Train Hotel, etc. You can choose one of them depends on your budget. At that time we choose Ibis Styles Amsterdam Central Station for some reasons. It is located just a few minutes walk from the station.
2. Walking near Amsterdam Central Station
When you go out of the central station, you will see canal in front of the station. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the canal with the boats that is leaning or moving down the canal. If you have enough time, I recommend going down the canal by boat while enjoying the beauty of Amsterdam.
3. DAM SQUARE
Dam Square is the center of the crowd in Amsterdam, located approximately 800 meters from Amsterdam Central Station. There are several important building in the Dam Square such as Madame Tussaud Wax Museum, Royal Palace, National Monument, etc.

4. Enjoying Scenic canal view from bridge over canal Amsterdam
Did you ever seen the scenic picture of canal with some bicycles are parking on the side of the bridge over the canal? Yeah, it is picture taken from one of the bridges over canal Amsterdam. Therefore, while exploring the canal Amsterdam, don’t forget to enjoy the scenic canal view from the bridge and take some photos of you there. To make it more iconic, make sure that there are some bicycles parking on the bridge when you are taking the photo of you.

5. Shopping
If you want to buy something as gifts for your family or friends, there are several shopping centers, shops and gift shops near Dam Square. For luxury goods, you can shop at De Bijenkorf, one of luxury department stores in Amsterdam.
For souvenir such display plates, key chains, miniature windmills and etc, You can buy at some small Gift Shops which is spread around the Dam Square.
